- Short description of the item and its origin
Itsugai Kajiura (1896–1981) was a Japanese Rinzai Zen monk affiliated with the 大徳寺 branch of Rinzai Buddhism in Kyoto.
He is regarded as one of the prominent Zen masters of the modern era. Kajiura served as the 511th head priest (Kancho) of Daitoku-ji. He was especially influential in the world of Japanese tea culture, and many of his bold, powerful calligraphic works (bokuseki) were created for use in tea ceremonies.
His hanging scrolls often feature Zen phrases such as “Buji” (Peacefulness / Nothing to worry about) and “Honrai Mu Ichimotsu” (Originally, not a single thing).
He passed away in 1981.
