Description from the seller
Antique ivory sculpture – Renaissance knight – Neo-Renaissance – Europe – approx. 1850–1880.
Very refined and decorative antique ivory sculpture depicting a standing Renaissance knight in full armor.
The figure stands in a dignified, self-assured pose and rests with both hands on the hilt of his sword. In the other hand he holds a richly worked shield with relief decoration of a crowned prince with a sword – a reference to medieval heraldry and knightly tradition.
The sculpture is entirely carved from solid ivory and shows exceptional craftsmanship. Especially striking are:
The finely modeled face with mustache and beard, the detailed helmet with crest, the carefully wrought mail, the richly decorated belt and chest ornamentation, the meticulously carved relief on the shield.
The sculpture rests on a black lacquered wooden plinth that gives the object a strong presentation.
Probably Germany or France,
second half of the 19th century (approx. 1850–1880).
In this period historianically styled knight figures were particularly popular within the Neo-Renaissance and romantic movements.
This very fine piece is supplied with expert statement and EU CITES certificate.
