Description from the seller
Rare 19th-century match holder with an ivory smoking figure – Europe – ca. 1850–1880
Special and decorative 19th-century smoking object consisting of a hand-carved ivory figure of a gentleman with a pipe, placed on a richly worked wooden match holder with an integrated striking surface.
The combination of the smoking man and the wooden base with rough striking surfaces makes the function clear: a tabletop match holder (“match striker”) for use in a salon or gentleman’s room.
The ivory figure
The standing gentleman is dressed in 18th-century attire with knee breeches, long coat and headwear. In his hand he holds a large pipe—a wonderfully thematic detail that perfectly suits the function of the object.
The ivory is finely carved with attention to facial expression, drapery folds and button details. Beautiful, warm patina appropriate to its age.
The wooden cylinder
The base is executed in turned wood with vertical ivory applications and round disk decorations.
Characteristic features:
• Three rough vertical striking surfaces
• Central opening at the top for matches
• Small ivory knobs as decorative finishing touches
An elegant combination of functionality and craftsmanship.
Origin & dating
Probably Western Europe, Netherlands.
Circa 1850–1880
Such luxurious smoking accessories were beloved in bourgeois interiors in the second half of the 19th century.
Material
Hand-carved ivory
Turned wood
Ivory applications
Condition
Good antique condition
Normal signs of aging and patina
Wear on the top in keeping with use
