Limited numbered French edition of Descartes' Discours de la méthode, 357 of 400, 126 pages in softback with a pale green slipcase, 33 × 25 cm, illustrated by C. P. Josso with 26 engravings, published in Paris by A la Tradition in 1947.
Description from the seller
Full title "Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences."
Lovely limited and numbered example of Descartes' foundational philosophical treatise. The work combines autobiography with philosophy across six parts, including scientific essays on Dioptrique, Météores, and Géométrie. It launched modern philosophy's emphasis on reason over tradition, influencing science and epistemology. Descartes presents it as a personal path to truth, not a rigid system.
From an edition of only 400 - this is number 357, printed on vélin d'Arches. With 26 original copper engravings by CP Josso, including frontispiece, engraved title, 6 full page engravings, 12 vignettes and 6 end pieces (one for each of the six parts).
Pale green slipcase, with a matching pale green folder within. This has a paper label to the spine, (which is a little darkened).
Inside this is a soft cover with title printed to the front. The text and illustrations are in sheets (as published) in 16 unstitched gathers. Half title, limitation etc. all in excellent condition, with just a touch of ghosting from some of the engravings.
126 pages. 33 x 25 cm.
