Biography
The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Robert Indiana is regarded as the most important representative of sign art.
To the world comes Robert Indiana, actually Robert Clark, in 1928 in New Castle, Indiana. The boy is adopted by the Clark couple shortly after birth and spends his childhood near Indiana. From 1958 he is known as Robert Clark Robert Indiana.
Indiana takes up a studio on Coenties Slip on the Lower East River. Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Jack Youngerman, Ann Wilson, Charles Hinman and Fred Mitchell also live here — these artists are united in their rejection of gestural Abstract Expressionism.
In particular Ellsworth Kelly significantly inspires Robert Indiana (Robert Clark) in this path. The young artist soon paints his first works in the strict Hard Edge style (1957).
In 1960 Robert Indiana makes a forward-looking discovery: he finds stencils used to label shipping crates, and from them creates the stencil-like lettering as the leitmotif of his works. The characteristic 'Signalkunst style' of Robert Indiana emerges and soon also refers to other sources such as signage or jukeboxes. In this way Robert Indiana also moves closer to Pop Art.
In the 1960s Robert Indiana enjoys extraordinary success. In particular his 'LOVE' motif becomes a true icon of these years and in 1970 is even transferred into a monumental sculpture.
Works by Robert Indiana can be seen in important international museums, such as the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, or the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Robert Indiana lived and worked until his death in 2018 on Vinalhaven Island, Maine.

The print is shipped flat, hence somewhat higher shipping costs.
