The encyclopedia was originally published in German between 1967 and 1972 under the direction of Bernhard Grzimek. It was later published in English, then in French between 1971 and 1975, under the direction of Maurice Fontaine, Member of the Institute of France, Director (at the time) of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris.
Considered the bible of the naturalist, this work is a true monument, to which the world’s most eminent scientists contributed, entirely devoted to the animal kingdom.
