Description from the seller
This work by Nino Calvo, a Sicilian artist born in 1983, is a vibrant example of gestural abstraction where color and movement become the absolute protagonists of the composition.
The piece presents itself as an explosion of chromatic energy. Despite the apparent chaos of the strokes, the structure is skillfully balanced by geometric elements that “anchor” the gaze.
The Chromatic Palette: It dominates a sunny and bold combination of primary yellow, intense pink, and red. These warm tones are interspersed with shades of greenish-yellow and touches of gray/black, creating a contrast that lends depth and rhythm.
The Gesture and Dynamism: The acrylic technique is laid down with curved, dynamic brushstrokes that recall vortices or a rotational movement. This “sign” suggests action painting, almost instinctive, conveying vitality and a kind of organic ferment.
Geometric Structure: To counter the fluidity of the background, Calvo inserts rigid geometric elements:
A long vertical black band on the left side that acts as the supporting axis.
White and semi-transparent rectangular patches that seem to float over the color, creating a stratification and visual “silence”.
A dark horizontal line at the bottom right that closes the composition.
The work seems to explore the dualism between chaos and order. The artist’s Sicilian roots may be reflected in the color choices (the sun- and grain-yellow, the intense reds), but the language is decidedly contemporary and cosmopolitan.
The geometric blocks superimposed on the dance of colors suggest an attempt by the intellect to frame pure emotion, or perhaps they represent urban windows looking out on a pulsating, untamable nature.
