Work description:
A powerful portrait as a homage to the Berlin art scene:
With “Rainer Fetting – Berlin,” Peter Robert Keil honors one of the formative representatives of the Neue Wilden (Neo-Expressionists) and also makes a statement for the expressive Berlin of the 1970s and 1980s.
The face is divided in two—the pink meets cool blue. The strong contrasts reflect tension, energy, and artistic friction. The bright yellow background intensifies the presence of the figure, while the black contouring gives Keil’s work its unmistakable signature. The cigarette motif stands for studio atmosphere, bohemianism, and the urban lifestyle of Berlin.
A painting with immediate impact—raw, direct, and self-confident.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where they settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon developed an interest in painting—especially in expressionist artists and in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him early craft skills and painting techniques.
