Description from the seller
This is a truly singular work that combines the realism of nature with a touch of surrealism. Ideal for collectors seeking pieces with personality.
Title: Ovis Sonata
Description of the work:
This fascinating oil painting features a European Mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon) represented with notable technical precision, majestically perched on the trunk of a tree. The piece stands out for its thematic originality: one of the animal's sturdy horns organically transforms into a French horn (hunting horn), creating a visual metaphor.
This work is a brilliant exercise in figurative surrealism, where the distortion of reality does not arise from chaos, but from an impeccable anatomical fusion. The tipping point of reality is the metamorphosis of the horn. I have "placed" an instrument on the animal; replacing the natural bone growth with polished brass.
• The visual paradox: The viewer accepts the mouflon’s anatomy as real until the eye traces the spiral of the horn and lands on the valves and bell of the horn.
• Nature vs Artifice: Represents the union of the wild (the animal) with human sophistication (the complex instrument).
The choice of a French horn (or hunting horn) is not accidental. It is the historical bridge between music and the mountains:
• The Origin of the Instrument: The horn evolves directly from animal horns used to signal during the hunt. Returning the instrument to the animal’s head closes an evolutionary circle: the hunting trophy is alive again.
• The Reversal of Roles: Traditionally, the horn sounds to announce death or pursuit of the piece. Here, the mouflon is the music. There is a poetic irony in that the animal bears the object that, in another context, would announce its own capture.
• The Sound of the Mountain: Symbolizes that the "cry" or language of the mouflon is not merely a bleat, but something noble, harmonious.
The mouflon is perched on a trunk, a typical pose in taxidermy or hunting monuments. However:
• The animal is vibrant and alert.
• Replacing the horn with a precious metal instrument elevates the animal from a "game piece" to a "living work of art".
The color palette is a harmony of earth tones, ochres and umbers that contrast with the metallic and golden shine of the musical instrument. The minimalist cream gradient background enhances the central figure, giving it dramatic prominence.
