Description from the seller
Main features of the work:
• Raffaele De Grada (1885–1957) • “Paesaggio” • Oil on canvas • 55×70 cm • 77×92 cm with frame • Signed and dated 1948 at the bottom right • Milanese provenance: Galleria Carini (Via Durini) and S. Erasmo Club d’Arte (Via della Spiga), evidenced by the original labels on the back • Provenance: private collection
Work belonging to the Italian twentieth-century Figurative Realism movement
“Paesaggio” is a powerful peripheral urban landscape from 1948, an authentic fragment of the postwar metropolitan belt. In the foreground opens a curved earthen track, almost a circular square not yet paved, that guides the eye and builds depth and movement. Low houses in blue tones emerge isolated in an open and silent space.
The work conveys a silence charged with waiting: it is the image of a place that is still, real, which tells with extraordinary authenticity the Italy that is preparing to restart.
The brushwork is full and compact, the material solid yet vibrant; a recognizable pictorial signature that strongly places the painting within the heart of Italian Twentieth-Century Figurative Realism.
Created in 1948, a year fully central to the artist’s production and indicated next to the autograph signature. The provenance, evidenced by the original labels on the back, from Galleria Carini of Via Durini — a historic Milanese establishment of the postwar period and a reference for Lombard collecting — and from S. Erasmo Club d’Arte of Via della Spiga — a refined cultural circle in the heart of Milan’s Quadrilateral — represents a concrete and documented value. An element that significantly strengthens the artwork’s historical and commercial profile.
Raffaele De Grada, born in Zurich in 1885 and a leading figure on Milan’s scene in the Twentieth Century, is a fully recognized author by critics and by museum institutions, with a solid and stable market over time. His landscapes from the Forties are among the most sought after for their ability to create a strong, recognizable emotional atmosphere: solid skies, restrained colors, silent spaces that convey tension, anticipation and authenticity. An oil signed and dated 1948, with double Milanese historical provenance documented, is not merely an interesting work: it is a prestigious and rare piece, highly qualifying for a refined, high-profile collection. Artistic quality, certain dating and traceable history come together here in a superior-level offering, hardly replicable on the market.
The buyer will receive the work in careful and sturdy packaging. Very fast shipping. Free pick-up possible in Monza/Milan.
