Description from the seller
Item Description:
荒田耕治 Arata Koji (1938–) — Ryokusō-yu Kummon Tsubo / Green Algae Glaze Cloud-Pattern Jar
A commanding stoneware jar by Arata Koji, one of the most distinguished ceramic artists of postwar Japan and a full member of the Japan Kogei Association.
The work is accompanied by its original tomobako (wooden storage box) inscribed with the title "Ryokusō-yu Kummon Tsubo" — Green Algae Glaze Cloud-Pattern Jar — along with the artist's signature and seal, as well as the artist's biographical leaflet (shiori).
The jar is of generous, assertive form: a wide, slightly flattened spherical body rising from a modest foot to a broad shoulder, then narrowing to a relatively small cylindrical mouth.
The profile is both monumental and meditative, with an elemental simplicity that speaks to the artist's mastery of form.
The surface is entirely enveloped in Arata's celebrated ryokusō-yu (green algae glaze) — a distinctive glaze of his own development that produces deep, layered tones shifting between moss green, grey-green, and rich teal, with a subtle matte depth that evokes ancient geological surfaces and the colour of still water seen through algae.
Against this atmospheric ground, stylized cloud motifs (kummon) are rendered in low relief, their rhythmic, looping contours creating a quiet visual poetry across the vessel's equatorial zone.
The interplay of glaze and relief gives the surface a painterly, almost meditative quality.
Works in ryokusō-yu by Arata are held in the collections of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a major public art museum, testifying to the enduring critical recognition of his glaze research and ceramic artistry.
Size
Height: 32 cm
Width: 32 cm
Depth: 32 cm
Weight: 5,100 g
Condition
The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs; the glaze surface is fully intact and the relief decoration is crisp and well-preserved; minor surface marks consistent with age are present but do not detract from the work.
