Description from the seller
Oil painting belonging to the French Post-Impressionist school, executed during the first half of the 20th century, around the 1930s, depicting a delicate winter urban scene observed from a railing in the foreground. The snow envelops the landscape in a quiet, luminous atmosphere, where architecture, vegetation, and urban elements are integrated through a sensitive, deeply pictorial interpretation of the surroundings.
The composition is built through a loose and vibrant brushstroke, characteristic of the evolution from impressionism toward more structured and personal approaches. The artist prioritizes the atmospheric sensation over descriptive detail, using a chromatic range of nuanced whites, soft greens, and broken tones that evoke the cold winter light with great tonal subtlety.
The work shows clear influences of French Post-Impressionism and the intimate landscape tradition developed in the interwar period, stylistically relatable to the artistic circle inheriting Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and, in its later evolution, sensibilities close to Maurice Utrillo or certain landscape painters of the École de Paris, where urban architecture and emotional atmosphere take on a leading role. The formal simplification, freedom of the brushwork, and interest in luminous impression place the work within this modern French pictorial tradition.
The painting is presented in a frame; the frame is included as a courtesy, with no commercial value and not part of the lot for appraisal purposes, due to its delicate nature.
The stretcher shows light and sparse old woodworm holes, currently treated, not compromising the structural stability of the whole.
An elegant and evocative painting, representative of the French artistic taste of the first half of the 20th century, particularly appealing for its poetic atmosphere and its refined interpretation of the snowy urban landscape.
