About the artist: M.C. Escher (1898-1972)
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a world-famous Dutch graphic artist, known for his unique woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints. Although he had no formal mathematical training, his work is imbued with complex mathematical concepts such as impossible objects, perspective illusions and regular tiling.
In his masterful work "Three Worlds" (1955) Escher shows his fascination with reflection and depth. By combining three layers — the reflection of trees, floating leaves, and a fish beneath the surface — he creates a contemplative image that invites the viewer to look beyond the first impression. His work continues to fascinate generations and is valued worldwide by both art lovers and scientists.
