About the artist: M.C. Escher (1898-1972)
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a world-renowned Dutch graphic artist, known for his unique woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints. Although he did not have formal mathematical training, his work is infused with complex mathematical concepts such as impossible objects, perspectival illusions, and the regular division of the plane.
In his masterwork "Three Worlds" (1955) Escher reveals his fascination with reflection and depth. By combining three layers — the reflection of trees, floating leaves, and a fish beneath the surface — he creates a hushed image that invites the viewer to look beyond the first impression. His work continues to fascinate generations and is celebrated worldwide by both art lovers and scientists."
