Description from the seller
Guangxu Emperor Cantonese porcelain plate with Rose Canton decoration, Period
This plate was made in Canton, China at the end of the 19th century for export to Europe. It is decorated in a European taste, the Rose Canton style. The difference between Rose Canton and Rose Medallion is that the latter has figures within the decoration, whereas the former consists only of floral (peony) decoration, birds, butterflies, and in this case bamboo. In the central medallion the scene shows Chinese Tongbao coins corresponding to the Guangxu Emperor’s period, with the corresponding characters (光緒通寶) being held by a bat, a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. In the central medallion a vase on a pedestal can also be seen. The decoration in the side medallions on the left and right consists of pink peonies with green leaves and birds, while the decoration of the lower and upper medallions features a bamboo landscape with yellowish birds. In the space between the medallions, butterflies can be appreciated.
