Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is an Italian painter and sculptor and one of the best-known representatives of Expressionism. His works are easily recognizable thanks to his characteristic style, which features elongated proportions, almond-shaped eyes, and a distinctive way of depicting the human figure. After studying at home, he moved to Paris in 1906, where he immersed himself in the Bohemian life of Montmartre and met many famous artists. In Paris he became acquainted with artists such as Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera. During this time Modigliani also met the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, who became one of his muses. His style was influenced by African masks and Cycladic idols, which he studied in museums. This led to the creation of his signature look: elongated faces and forms, expressive lines, and a slightly melancholic appearance. In Modigliani portraits the eyes are often depicted as empty or without pupils. The artist explained this by saying that he could not yet discern the soul of the person depicted. His only lifelong exhibition was closed in 1917 by the police due to public outrage at obscene nude pictures. After his death, interest in Modigliani's work grew rapidly, and the value of his paintings reached record heights.
