Description from the seller
Vishnu
South India, Tamil Nadu
19th century
Bronze, lost-wax casting
H. 29 cm
This bronze sculpture represents Vishnu, one of the three great gods of the Hindu Trimūrti, protector of the world and guarantor of cosmic order. The god stands upright in a hieratic stance on a base adorned with stylized lotus motifs. He has four arms, holding his emblematic attributes: the chakra (discus) and the shankha (conch), while his front hands perform the gestures of protection (abhaya mudrā) and granting (varada mudrā).
The oval face, with a peaceful smile and half-closed eyes, expresses divine serenity. The tall conical crown (kiritamukuta) finely ciselled, the heavy ear-rings and the rich necklace convey the iconography characteristic of South Indian Vishnu.
The modeling of the torso, supple and symmetrical, as well as the drapery rhythm of the legs testify to the finesse of execution typical of Tamil Nadu workshops. The lost-wax technique, still visible by the cavity at the base, gives the piece a balanced and vibrant presence.
The dark brown patina, punctuated by gilded wear, attests to long ritual veneration and prolonged contact with devotees. This work accurately illustrates the combination of spiritual idealism and formal refinement that characterizes South Indian bronze statuary.
Condition: Old patina, wear and traces of ritual handling, some green copper encrustations. Good overall condition.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
