Description from the seller
DARLÈS DE LINIÈRE. Leatherless Pumps.
Paris, at the Royal Manufacture of the said Pumps and at Antoine Boudet, 1768.
1 vol. folio, (25.5 x 20 cm); [3] ff., 59 pp., 92 pp. Contemporary full calf binding, gilt-decorated spine with raised bands, title piece in burgundy morocco. Corner wear, upper cap missing, spine ends cracked.
"Descriptions, Properties & Engraved Plates in copper-engraving, of the new Leatherless Pumps, from the invention of M. Darlès de Linière, Esquire, who first presented them for the service of the Navy, and subsequently adapted for fires and all other uses."
Original edition of this treatise on the water pumps invented by Darlès de Linière. They contained no leather and lasted longer, worked faster, could draw larger quantities of water, and could even operate with muddy water. Although they were designed for use on ships and by firefighters, they could also be used for industrial and domestic purposes. At the end of the work, there is a section on the profitable use of these pumps in the colonies, especially for sugar mills.
With seven folding plates hors texte.
Old printed paper pasted opposite the half-title: "The most fortunate invention remains fruitless for society if its usefulness is not known, if its use is not encouraged by the Great, by the Magistrates, by the elite Citizens who concern themselves with the public good & the interest of the State. It is from this point of view that we confidently present this Work, which announces significant advantages for humanity." With the handwritten signature of Mgr Jolly de Fleury, Prosecutor General of the Parliament.
We include four pamphlets in-4, not bound:
- Avis concernant les Pompes de la Marine et autres, De l'invention de M. Darles de Liniere (1766). 8 pp.
- Tarif du prix des Pompes sans cuirs, De l'invention de M. Darles de Liniere, Esquire (1768). 4 pp.
