Pair of hexagonal boxes from China, leather over wood with brown lacquer, dating to 1950–1960, each 18 cm high, 18 cm wide and 18 cm deep, with brass hardware, in good used condition with minor wear; interiors fully lined with original almanac and calendar paper featuring Bagua diagrams and lunar astrology characters, exterior decorated with a gold Shou character and gold lines.
Description from the seller
Technical Description:
Material: Leather-covered wood or thick lacquered paper (lacquered hide), a traditional southern China technique to ensure durability and resilience.
Exterior Decoration: * Features the stylized Shou character (寿), symbol of longevity, on the lid and front in gold.
Lateral medallions with popular narrative scenes (including a traditional archer), representing classical virtues.
Decorative gold lines that accentuate the hexagonal shape.
Interior (Exceptional): The boxes are fully lined with original paper from almanacs and Chinese fortune-telling calendars. They include Bagua diagrams and calligraphic characters related to lunar astrology and the pursuit of fortune. This detail suggests real domestic use, probably for storing valuables or for rituals.
Hardware: Original brass closures and handles (paitong) with natural patina. The security bolt remains functional.
Condition: good state of preservation for its age. It shows natural wear on the gilded edges that confirms its age and genuine use. There is flaking on the back due to dehydration (see photo).
The wooden feet preserve the hexagonal shape.
