Description from the seller

COELESTINUS:
"Mausoleum or the heartfelt grave of the Bavarian Apostle and Blood Witness of Christ, Saint Emmeram. Adorned with many other holy-souled bishops, abbots, emperors and kings, queens, princes, counts and lords’ interments. So in the aforementioned St. Emmeram’s Cloister-Church in Regensburg to be seen. Together with a comprehensive history, what is noteworthy and what posterity still wishes to know about the origin or beginning of the cloister, up to the 1650th year after Christ’s birth, described in the same, and for the aforementioned city, what happened there"

1680, German

The work “Mausoleum or the heartfelt grave of the Bavarian Apostle and Martyr of Christ Saint Emmeram” by Coelestinus (1680) describes in detail the history and significance of Regensburg’s St. Emmeram Monastery. At its center is the martyr Saint Emmeram, venerated as the “Bavarian Apostle.” The book narrates the origin of the monastery, its development up to the year 1650, and the burial sites of numerous saints, bishops, abbots, emperors, kings, princes and nobles located there. In addition to an artful portrayal of the mausoleum, the work offers a chronological and hagiographic account that unites spiritual veneration with historical memory. Coelestinus aims to hand down the history of the abbey and its prominent figures to future generations. Thus the text is a blend of monastery chronicle, saint’s legend, and memorial writing about one of Bavaria’s oldest and most influential Benedictine monasteries.

20 x 15.5 cm. 392 pages. Embossed parchment binding. Beautiful gilt edges. Sturdy block. 5 copper engravings and a fold-out plate. Overall in very good condition, in an exceptionally light parchment binding of its time.
