Description from the seller
This painting presents two faces of Zeca Afonso, an indispensable figure of Portuguese protest music and the eternal symbol of the Revolution of April 25, 1974. The duplication of the face is not mere formal repetition: it suggests presence, echo, and permanence—Zeca Afonso as an individual voice and, simultaneously, as the collective conscience of a people in the struggle for freedom.
The deep, dominant black background represents the period of oppression and silencing experienced before the Revolution. It is on this historical darkness that the work builds its visual discourse, making the illuminated faces emerge as beacons of resistance and hope.
Golden brushstrokes traverse the composition with movement and intensity, symbolizing the early expressions of freedom achieved with the Carnation Revolution. Gold appears as a metaphor for light, awakening, and the precious value of newly won freedom.
The red, applied expressively and gesturally, directly recalls the red carnations—the major icon of April 25—and the symbolic blood of struggle, courage, and collective sacrifice. This color introduces tension, passion, and historical memory, balancing the brightness of the gold.
The expressive technique, marked by visible brushstrokes and overlays, reinforces the idea of revolutionary movement and social transformation. It is not a realistic portrait, but an emotional and political interpretation, where the pictorial matter carries meaning and narrative.
This canvas is, thus, a visual homage to the Portuguese Revolution and to Zeca Afonso’s central role as the voice of freedom, resistance, and hope. A work rich in memory, symbolism, and cultural identity, that calls not only on history but also on emotion and the commitment to the values of April. Spray on canvas.
