Armored Fish - Fossil matrix - Stensiopelta - Ukraine

This is an extremely rare fossil fish of the genus Stensiopelta pustulata from Ukraine.

This genus from a formation approximately 415 million years old was heavily armored and had no jaw. The mouth was located on the underside of the head, so it can be assumed that these fishes ploughed the seafloor in search of soft food.

This specimen is fully preserved with its tail.

Geology: Early Devonian, Lochkovian, Dniester Formation – about 415 million years
