The Drakkar, the Viking ship, is an oil painting on canvas by Samuel Henry Phillips (19th century, United Kingdom), dated 1868, hand-signed, in good condition, depicting a maritime landscape; canvas 73.5 × 51.5 cm, framed with an antique oak frame measuring 85 × 63 cm, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Antique and scenographic oil painting on canvas, of English school and dated 1868.
The work depicts Vikings aboard a Drakkar at the mercy of a stormy sea. The Drakkar (or Dreki) are dragon-warships, long, narrow and light, designed for speed and raids. Often decorated with dragon-shaped prows, they were ideal for ascending rivers and maneuvering in coastal waters.
The painting is signed at the bottom left S.H.PHILLIPS (Samuel Henry Phillips), a British 19th-century painter known precisely for marine subjects with boats and warships as protagonists.
On the back there is the dating 1868, slightly faded by an old stain (see photo).
Condition of the painting: good with normal patina of time that makes it even more evocative.
canvas size cm 73.5 x 51.5
