A handwritten inscription on the back reads:« Portrait of Michel Castaing 1936 by his own father René-Marie Castaing, Grand Prix de Rome for painting ».

The work is not signed on the front. The attribution to René-Marie Castaing rests on this ancient note on the reverse.

Beautiful academic handling of volumes and modeling, typical of portrait studies from the 1930s. An intimate and touching subject, treated with sensitivity.
