Description from the seller
“Vigil” (2026)
Oil on canvas
170 x 140 cm
A male figure stands with its back to the viewer, face turning fractionally - enough to suggest awareness, not enough to fully reveal it. The curling hair, the muscles of the back, the slight rotation of the neck are all drawn from a deep red foundation through careful paint removal. The body is turned away, yet the partial turn of the head holds a tension between departure and return, between withholding and disclosure.
VANTA has used the removal technique to map the back’s anatomy with quiet precision - shoulder blades, the line of the spine, the way muscle shifts beneath skin - all rendered within a single red without shadow in the conventional sense, only degrees of removal. Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki. The fragment of face caught in that partial turn carries the same sculptural stillness as the body, neither inviting nor refusing the viewer’s presence.
The figure occupies the red void with the self-contained weight of a sentinel. It is not leaving. It is not arriving. It holds its position in the turn, suspended in the interval between one direction and another.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
