Description from the seller
“Swale” (2026)
Oil on canvas
180 x 130 cm
Viewed from behind, a human figure materializes from deep blue through strategic paint removal. The form’s arms wrap around itself in a gesture of self-protection or comfort, head tilted slightly downward in a posture that reads as vulnerable and introspective. VANTA has worked the uniform blue foundation to reveal this contemplative figure, using varying degrees of removal to suggest anatomy, gesture, and psychological state within a single color.
The back-facing orientation amplifies the sense of interiority - we witness this moment of self-containment without the figure’s awareness or acknowledgment. Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki. The removal techniques create subtle gradations that define musculature, the curve of spine, the way arms press against torso - all carved from blue through patient, precise intervention.
The large canvas allows this solitary figure to exist in substantial darkness, surrounded by the deep blue void from which it emerges. The pose feels timeless and universal - a human form seeking comfort in its own embrace, suspended in blue silence.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
