Antique silver ring with an oval agate cabochon, Middle East origin, in a mid-20th century dynastic style (ca. 1930–1970).
Description from the seller
Antique Silver Ring with Agate Cabochon, mid-20th century, hand-crafted
A substantial hand-crafted silver ring featuring an oval agate cabochon set within a serrated bezel and flanked by elaborate openwork scroll shoulders.
The ring demonstrates traditional silversmithing with pierced vegetal ornament and engraved geometric detailing around the bezel. The bold sculptural design and thick band reflect the style of tribal and bazaar jewelry produced in Iran during the mid-20th century.
Stone
Natural agate (chalcedony)
Likely a Yemeni agate variety.
Characteristics visible in the stone:
translucent chalcedony body
warm honey-amber coloration
darker reddish inclusion at base
smooth domed cabochon polish
Agate rings have deep cultural significance in the Middle East. In Iran and the Islamic world they are traditionally worn for protection, prosperity, and spiritual blessing.
Many Iranian rings historically used Aqiq (agate) sourced from Yemen or Iran.
Ring Construction
Features consistent with traditional hand work:
• thick cast silver band
• pierced openwork shoulders
• hand-engraved geometric cross-hatch decoration around bezel
• serrated crown bezel setting
• pierced under-gallery beneath stone
The interior of the setting shows natural tool marks and oxidation typical of handmade silver jewelry rather than modern machine casting.
