Biography
Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most important fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, after his emigration he worked in Paris, Monaco, and Los Angeles for international magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Elle. With his uncompromising, erotically charged visual language, he helped shape the visual culture of luxury fashion like few other photographers of his time.
Newton photographed for Chanel and Hermès, among others, creating imagery that staged elegance, power, and sensuality. His unmistakable style—cool, staged, yet provocative—influenced the aesthetics of other luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Patek Philippe, which to this day embody similar values of exclusivity and perfection.
His works are now represented in the world's most important museums and collections and are among the most valuable works of contemporary photography. Helmut Newton remains a synonym for luxury, femininity, and the art of staging.
