Biography
Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most important fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, after his emigration he worked in Paris, Monaco and Los Angeles for international magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. With his uncompromising, erotically charged visual language he shaped the visual culture of luxury fashion like few other photographers of his time.
Newton photographed for Chanel and Hermès, among others, creating imagery that highlighted elegance, power and sensuality. His unmistakable style—cool, staged, and at the same time provocative—also influenced the aesthetics of other luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Patek Philippe, which to this day embody similar values of exclusivity and perfection.
Today his work is represented in the world’s most important museums and collections and ranks among the most valuable pieces of contemporary photography. Helmut Newton remains a synonym for luxury, femininity, and the art of staging.
