Description of the work
Original photograph belonging to the series “The Sun of Pompeii,” created by Enzo Rosamilia in the early 1980s. The image depicts the ancient Roman amphitheater of Pompeii, one of the oldest masonry amphitheaters in the world, immortalized in a broad and almost contemplative vision.
The composition emphasizes the circular shape of the amphitheater and the relationship between archaeological space and human presence: a solitary figure at the center of the arena underscores the monumentality of the place and the temporal dimension of history.
The photograph is manually printed by the artist on Amalfi paper, an artisanal paper produced according to traditional techniques, subsequently sepia-toned. This process gives the image a warm, tactile tone and a nearly painterly quality, transforming the photograph into a unique artistic object.
The series The Sun of Pompeii consists of 31 photographs made between 1980 and 1983, all printed in the 50 × 70 cm format with this particular technique.
