Description from the seller

Title: “Battle at Sea”
In this intense maritime composition, Herman Conrad captures with great narrative energy the culminating moment of a naval clash between two imposing 18th-century sailing ships. The painting, created in oil on canvas with the format 70 × 100 cm, immerses the viewer in the heart of a battle on the stormy sea, where power, movement, and drama fuse into a spectacular scene.
The two great ships with sails set dominate the central scene, advancing toward each other with a threatening bow. The tall masts and sails billowed by the wind form a complex weave of ropes, spars, and canvases driven by the storm. The light strikes the surfaces of the sails with warm, golden tones, creating a vibrant contrast with the turquoise sky and the pale clouds that part in the background.
The sea, rendered with dynamic and layered brushstrokes, appears turbulent and powerful: green, deep waves crash against the hulls, throwing white spray that accentuates the sense of movement. From the sides of the ships, cannon bursts are visible through clouds of smoke and sudden reddish flashes that emerge among the waves and the gunpowder smoke. The visual impact of these explosions lends the scene a cinematic intensity.
In the foreground, a small launch with a few men aboard adds a human and narrative element to the composition. The rowers contend with the rough sea, underscoring the fragility of man in the face of the grandeur and violence of the naval battle looming above them.
Flocks of seabirds cross the sky on the sides of the scene, introducing a sense of depth and open space. The overall tones — sea greens, ochre of the sails, browns of the hulls, and reddish-brown accents of the smoke — create a warm and evocative color balance.
The painting stands out for the richness of detail and the strongly dynamic composition, which guides the eye from the agitation of the foreground waves to the imposing sails rising against the sky. The work evokes the epic charm of ancient sea battles and returns to the viewer all the power and romanticism of the maritime painting tradition.
