Description from the seller

Antique silver snuff box from Austria:

Origin: Vienna

Maker: Unknown

Other hallmarks: 2× ZII, Dutch import mark for second-quality silver 835/1000.

Period 1815-1900

In the period of 1815 to 1866, Venice was closely connected to Austria. During this time, several silversmiths from Vienna and other cities within the German-speaking part of the kingdom drew inspiration from this eccentric city. The box most likely comes from Vienna, as this city was specifically known for producing scenes of Italy.

This snuff box is most likely a rarity. The box is decorated with an engraving of Piazza San Marco, which remains a highly visited tourist destination today. In the scene, the square is visible with the Doge’s Palace on the left. There is also a cloudy sky formed with flying birds. Furthermore, on the right are two columns. Italian figures also walk on the square, giving it a lively appearance. The back is also beautifully worked with a cleanly engraved pattern, characteristic of Viennese silver craftsmanship. Incidentally, the engravings are still in good condition. Moreover, it has a gilded interior to prevent oxidation. It is a fine addition for collectors of snuff boxes or antique silver from continental Europe.
