This captivating semi-abstract winter landscape evokes the legendary slopes of the Dachstein massif in the Austrian Alps. A vivid frozen river or stream dominates the foreground, its icy surface fractured into bold mosaic-like patches of pink, yellow, orange and blue – reflecting the drama of the surrounding landscape. Snow-laden alpine trees frame both sides of the composition, while a solitary red-roofed alpine cabin nestles beneath a brilliant turquoise mountain in the middle distance. A warm peach and golden sky glows above, contrasting beautifully with the cool blues and whites of the snow. The gestural impasto technique, reminiscent of the great European expressionist landscape tradition, brings raw energy and luminous vitality to this deeply Austrian scene.
