Holm oak – Black ink engraving on rice paper

Original graphic work by Spanish artist Natali Wood, created through an artisanal process that combines wood engraving with the Japanese technique Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban).

The wooden matrix is worked manually and subjected to a light charring of its surface —the characteristic Yakisugi feature— to amplify the natural texture of the wood and its internal structure.

The result is an organic and powerful image in carbon black ink, where every line faithfully reproduces the real imprint of the wood, captured without digital processes. Each impression shows slight variations inherent to the manual process, ensuring that every copy has a unique character. The use of handmade rice paper provides lightness, transparency, and a strong sensitivity to the contrast between the deep black of the ink and the white of the support.

Natali Wood's work focuses on manual processes, the relationship between nature and matter, and the trace of time in wood, turning the tree’s internal structure into a graphic image.
