Description from the seller

Title: Eça de Queirós – Barbarous Proses – 1st Edition – Porto, 1903
Description:
One of the rarest editions of Eça de Queirós. First edition in volume of this collection of texts originally published in serial form in the newspapers Gazeta de Portugal and Revolução de Setembro, with an introduction by the writer and diplomat Jayme Batalha Reis.
Published by Livraria Chardron in Porto in 1903, only three years after the author's death, this work belongs to the set of posthumous publications that reveal the multiple facets of Eça’s genius – in this case, his most saturnine, ironic and experimental side, influenced by the satanic poems of Leconte de Lisle.
Contents: Includes texts such as "Notas marginaes", "Macbeth", "A ladainha da dôr", "Entre a neve", "Os mortos", "A Península", "Mysticismo humorístico", "O milhafre", "Lisboa", "O Senhor Diabo", "Memórias d'uma forca", among others.
Characteristics of the copy:
Editor: Livraria Chardron, of Lello & Irmão, editors
Place and year: Porto, 1903
Format: In-8º (approx. 19.5 cm)
Pagination: LIII + 246 pages
Binding: [Half leather with spine and corners, raised bands on the spine with title in gold]
Condition: [Wear on the spine, foxing on pages, etc.]
Bibliographic value: Considered one of the most difficult works to find in first edition. The book presents a historical introduction by Jayme Batalha Reis, a close friend of Eça, which contextualizes the genesis of these texts from the author's younger and more romantic period.

Title: Eça de Queiroz — Prosas Bárbaras — 1st Edition — Porto, Livraria Chardron, 1903

Description:
First book edition of Prosas Bárbaras by Eça de Queiroz, published by Livraria Chardron (Lello & Irmão, Porto, 1903) — three years after the author's death. Full dark green leather binding with gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine.

This volume gathers the early journalistic writings of the young Eça, originally published in the Gazeta de Portugal in the 1860s, here compiled with a long and remarkable introduction by Jayme Batalha Reis — Eça's closest friend at the time — recounting episodes from their Lisbon bohemian life and the writer's literary formation. The two-colour title page (red and black), with a portrait of the author and the publisher's monogram, is in good condition.

An unusual and bibliophilically significant work; this first book edition is particularly rare. Binding in good overall condition; pages with natural age-related yellowing.

Prosas Bárbaras — 1ère Édition — Porto, Livraria Chardron, 1903

Titre: Eça de Queiroz — Prosas Bárbaras — 1ère Édition — Porto, Livraria Chardron, 1903
