Description from the seller
Rare German 150mm artillery shell casing - WWI 1916 Karlsruhe - Heavy artillery - 1.7 kg
Authentic heavy artillery shell casing from World War I German, caliber 150mm, manufactured in Karlsruhe in December 1916.
Technical specifications:
Diameter: 15 cm
Height: 11 cm
Weight: 1.7 kg
Material: Brass/solid copper
Significant thickness (typical of heavy artillery)
"1916 DEZ" engraved on the base (December 1916)
"520" marked on the upper part (lot/serial number)
Original turquoise blue interior markings
Provenance: Karlsruhe (Baden-Württemberg)
Manufactured in the Karlsruhe arsenals or arms factories, a major industrial city in southern Germany during the Great War. The Karlsruhe region housed several arms manufacturers producing massively for the German war effort.
This casing most likely comes from a German heavy field howitzer (type sFH 13 or K 16) used on the Western Front. 150mm shells were used to destroy fortifications and bombard enemy lines at long range.
Ancient natural patina with noble green oxidation typical of centennial brass. Traces of original circular machining marks perfectly visible. Beautiful piece of “trench art” transformed into a decorative object in the immediate postwar period, a common practice in conflict zones.
All markings are consistent with German production of 1916. The substantial weight (1.7 kg) and the metal thickness confirm that this is an authentic heavy artillery piece.
Neutralized and inert object, completely emptied of any explosive or pyrotechnic components. Purely decorative and collectible use.
