【Product details】
A pair of antique Japanese samurai sode (armour shoulder guards) dating to the Edo period, originally part of a traditional yoroi armour set. Sode were worn to protect the shoulders and upper arms while allowing movement during combat.
Each guard is constructed from horizontal lacquered plates connected with silk lacing in alternating tones. The structure allows flexibility while maintaining protective strength. The edges are finished with decorative gilt metal fittings featuring chrysanthemum motifs, and the lower sections display additional ornamental metal plates.
The chrysanthemum is one of the most important symbols in Japanese culture. It represents longevity, rejuvenation, and nobility, and has long been associated with the Japanese imperial family. As a decorative motif on armour, it conveyed dignity, protection, and auspicious meaning.
Condition: Fair antique condition with soiling, surface deterioration, tears, stains, patina, and some rust. Please refer carefully to the photographs for details.
