This edition of the works of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788), published by Furne in 1838, is one of the most popular versions of the 19th century. It testifies to the desire to keep the naturalist’s legacy up to date by incorporating the anatomical contributions of Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton and the more modern classification of Georges Cuvier. This first volume opens with the “Theory of the Earth,” a foundational text in which Buffon proposes a chronology of planetary formation, in rupture with biblical Genesis.
"The Furne edition is renowned for the finesse of its steel engravings, often enhanced with hand coloring in the deluxe copies."
