Madonna and Child, an 18th‑century oil painting from Czechia attributed to the Austrian school, in the Biedermeier style, sold with frame; dimensions 70.5 × 48.5 cm (framed 80 × 58 cm), in good condition.
Description from the seller
This evocative 18th-century oil painting on canvas depicts a classic "Madonna and Child."
The composition focuses on a half-length figure of the Virgin Mary, draped in a rich, traditional blue mantle that symbolizes her heavenly grace.
She gazes tenderly and somberly at the infant Jesus, who is depicted with naturalistic warmth.
The use of a dark, atmospheric background (chiaroscuro) creates a dramatic contrast, drawing the viewer’s eye directly to the illuminated figures.
Attributed to the Bohemian School of the late 1700s, this work is a fine example of the devotional art prevalent in Central Europe during this period.
The artist employs a soft, blended brushwork characteristic of 19th-century academic traditions that sought to emulate the reverence of the Old Masters.
The painting is housed in its original, period ornate gilt wood frame. The frame features classic molding and a lustrous gold finish that complements the warm tones of the oil paint, making it a ready-to-display statement piece. Please note that the painting is sold without the frame, which will be provided free of charge as a gift upon purchase.
The painting shows significant signs of age, including a vertical tear on the right side with associated paint loss and flaking. The paint surface exhibits craquelure throughout.
Dimensions: 70,5cm x 48,5cm. Framed: 80cm x 58cm.
