Description from the seller
Jules AGARD (1905-1986) – "Enigmes" (1975)
The Master's Balance: Painting as Construction
THE ARTIST:
An indispensable figure of the Vallauris movement, Jules Agard was Pablo Picasso's master turner for 25 years (1946-1971). If the Spanish genius entrusted him with shaping his forms, it is in his own painting that Agard revealed his full depth. "Enigmes" is the perfect testimony of this artist who thought in volumes and structures.
THE WORK:
Completed in 1975, this oil on canvas is a plunge into geometric and organic abstraction. Unlike his sunnier landscapes, "Enigmes" invites intellectual contemplation.
The Style: Here you find an architectural composition where each block of color seems to fit together with the precision of a craftsman. The material, treated with great generosity, adds a relief that brings the surface to life.
The Title: Written on the back, it suggests a hidden mystery behind the shapes, a search for the invisible characteristic of Agard's maturity.
TECHNICAL DETAILS & AUTHENTICITY
Technique: Original oil on canvas.
Dimensions: 54 x 65 cm (Format 15F – ideal for a private collection).
Condition: Excellent. Deep colors, healthy canvas, original stretcher.
Authenticity markings (Precisions for the buyer):
Signature: The work is signed "J. Agard" very legibly with a brush in the bottom right.
Back annotations: The canvas bears on the reverse the artist's autograph inscriptions on the frame and the canvas itself: the title "Enigmes" as well as the exact date "1975".
WHY THIS CANVAS IS AN INVESTMENT?
Reference Year: 1975 is a pivotal period when Agard fully freed himself from Picasso's influence to assert his own vision.
Madoura Lineage: The worldwide aura of the Madoura workshop continues to elevate the value of the artists who kept it alive.
Liquid Format: The 15F format is particularly sought after by international collectors (USA, Asia, Europe) because it combines visual impact with easy transport.
"Enigmes" is a work that demands a closer look. It is probably the most 'intellectual' piece of the artist we present. It will appeal to the collector seeking a modern artwork capable of dialoguing with design or contemporary furniture.
