Description from the seller

Antique Brass Nesting Weight Set in Decorative Lidded Cup – Officially Verified Trade Weights – Europe, 19th Century
An attractive and finely crafted antique brass nesting weight set, housed in a decorative lidded container. The set consists of a series of graduated brass weights that fit neatly inside one another and are stored in a beautifully engraved brass cup with hinged lid and ornate handle.

The container is decorated with engraved ornamental motifs and fitted with a traditional pivoting locking mechanism. On the lid, official verification marks are visible, including a crown and shield stamp, indicating that the set was once inspected and approved for commercial use by a European authority of weights and measures. Such verification marks were required for instruments used by merchants to guarantee accurate and fair trade.

Inside the container is a complete set of eight turned brass weights, carefully manufactured to nest perfectly within each other. Sets of this type were commonly used in the 19th century by jewelers, pharmacists, merchants, and coin dealers for weighing small quantities of precious materials, medicines, spices, or coins.

The brass shows a beautiful natural patina acquired over time, enhancing the historical character of the piece. The mechanical parts and hinge remain intact, and the set retains its full functionality as well as strong decorative appeal.

Objects of this kind represent a fascinating part of the history of commerce and measurement, combining practical precision with elegant craftsmanship.
