Jan Jonges (1921-1976)
Jan Jonges was born on December 12, 1921, in Amsterdam. He decided to make painting his profession, but he did not pursue an art education and is therefore a self-taught painter. In the late forties of the last century, he came into contact with, among others, Karel Appel, Lucebert, and Carel Willink. He joined in Amsterdam the group De Onafhankelijken and the BBK. Jonges painted, drew, and watercolor-painted in a figurative and semi-abstract manner, landscapes, harbors, ships, still lifes, figures, and animals. Works by him were acquired by the government and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
After exploring various art movements, such as the Cobragroep, Jan ultimately became a member of the Onafhankelijken, an association of visual artists founded in 1921 and based in Amsterdam. This group positioned itself as free and independent from the conservative and entrenched views on art. The fresh ideas and new ideals were expressed by organizing meetings and giving opportunities to exhibit, work, and critique.
