An Inuit seal hunter carved from walrus tusk, Greenland, dating to the early 20th century, about 11.5 cm tall (18 cm with spear), depicting a hunter with spear and rifle on his back and a small portable hunting stool, with the seal dragged by a cord and removable spear and stool, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Inuit hunter with seal – carved Arctic hunting scene
Finely carved figure of an Inuit seal hunter with a hunted seal. The scene shows a hunter with a hunting spear, a rifle on his back, and a small portable hunting stool – typical equipment of Arctic seal hunting. The seal is attached to the hunter by a cord and is dragged behind him.
The figure is carved from light organic material (walrus tusk) and fitted with wooden elements for the spear and rifle. The simplified but characteristic form corresponds to the traditional Inuit carving of the 20th century. Such depictions often show everyday scenes of Arctic hunting life and were produced both for local use and for the collectors’ market.
Particularly noteworthy is the combination of the traditional hunting spear and a rifle, reflecting the transition from traditional to modern hunting techniques in the Arctic. The small hunting stool presents another realistic detail used by hunters while waiting for seals at breathing holes in the ice. The hunting stool and spear are removable.
Dimensions: total height (with spear tip): approx. 18 cm; height of the figure: approx. 11.5 cm
Condition:
Good age-related condition with light patina and minor signs of wear. The wooden elements and cords are present and stable.
Legal notice:
The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is listed in EU wildlife protection law in Annex B. Trade within the EU is permissible with proven legal provenance. A corresponding provenance certificate is provided.
Beautiful ethnographic collectors’ piece from the Arctic Inuit tradition with an authentic depiction of seal hunting.
