Description from the seller
Francesco Tammaro – “Paris”
Oil on board, 24 × 30 cm
The painting depicts a lively late 19th-century Parisian urban scene, set in a large square animated by passersby, carriages, and elegant architecture. The composition opens in depth from a wide, sunny sandy foreground, where some figures dressed in elegant attire stroll in pairs. The characters wear typical Belle Époque outfits: hats, long women's dresses, and men's suits, rendered with quick, concise brushstrokes that suggest movement and vitality.
In the center of the square stands a sculptural monument on a high plinth, around which city life concentrates. A carriage drawn by white horses crosses the scene, guided by a coachman, while numerous passersby move in different directions, creating a dynamic weave of presences. The figures are painted with swift, vibrant touches, capable of conveying the atmosphere of the city without lingering on descriptive details.
On the left side of the composition unfolds a row of historic buildings with ornate façades, balconies, and large windows. Some signs and colored awnings enliven the architectural surface, introducing warm color accents that contrast with the more sober tones of the stone. To the right, other palaces line the square, with sloping roofs and façades punctuated by regular windows, typical of Parisian architecture.
The sky occupies a significant portion of the scene and is rendered with soft, blended strokes of blue and gray, suggesting light clouds and a diffused light. This luminosity envelops the entire square, reflecting on the light ground and helping to create an airy and bright atmosphere.
The color palette alternates warm earth tones of the buildings with touches of blue, gray, and green that define the sky, shadows, and vegetation. The colors of the figures’ clothing—pink, blue, ochre, and black—dot the composition with small vivid accents.
The work stands out for its loose, impressionistic brushwork, capable of capturing the vitality of city life and the elegance of historic Paris, returning a scene rich in movement and atmosphere. The artist’s signature is visible in the lower right corner of the board.
