Description from the seller
Ancient Timor ceremonial Ikat textile – handwoven cotton with natural dyes – Indonesia, c.1950–1970
Description:
Authentic traditional Ikat textile from Timor Occidental, Indonesia, completely handwoven in cotton using the ancestral Ikat technique, one of the most distinctive weaving methods in Southeast Asia.
The design features rhythmic longitudinal bands with geometric motifs and stylized figures, typical of Timor’s textile tradition. These motifs form repetitive, balanced compositions that reflect the ceremonial aesthetic inherent to fabrics used in social and ritual contexts.
The colors — deep indigo, oxide red, black, and cream — correspond to the traditional palette obtained from plant-based natural dyes, applied to the thread before weaving following the complex reserving process characteristic of Ikat.
The design was created using the traditional Ikat technique, in which the threads are bound and dyed before weaving. The slight misalignment visible in the motifs is characteristic of this artisanal process and serves as a clear sign of authenticity in traditional Ikat textiles.
The weaving was done on a traditional loom, showing the slight irregularity typical of textiles made completely by hand. These small variations are part of the craft process and belong to authentic Ikat fabrics.
The multicolored fringes tied at the ends are original, indicating that the textile was finished directly on the loom with no subsequent cuts.
From its stylistic characteristics, the fabric appears to correspond to Timor Occidental textile tradition, possibly associated with the Atoni / Amarasi style, a region known for the quality and graphic strength of its Ikat.
This type of textile was traditionally used as ceremonial cloth or a wrapping garment, and today it is highly valued by collectors of Asian textile art, ethnography specialists, and interior decorators.
