Description from the seller
A late 19th-century Hebrew book that bridges the gap between traditional Jewish scholarship and the natural sciences.
The book is titled Mesilot Ha-Me’orot (Pathways of the Luminaries), Part One and Two.
Author: Dov Ber Rukenstein (Dov Ber Rakinstein), who is described as being from Berdychiv but living in Tiberias (the holy city in Israel).
The text describes the work as a comprehensive guide to Astronomy (אסטראנאמיא) and Geography (געאגראפיע). It promises to explain the movements of the celestial spheres, the stars, and the paths of the earth based on both ancient and modern scientific views.
Publication Date: 1897 (Hebrew year 5658).
Location: Printed in Lemberg (modern-day Lviv, Ukraine), which was a major center for Jewish printing at the time.
This book belongs to a genre of "Haskalah" (Jewish Enlightenment) literature. During this era, many Jewish scholars sought to introduce the religious community to secular sciences—like astronomy and geography—using the Hebrew language.
The title itself, Mesilot Ha-Me’orot, is a poetic way of saying "The Orbits of the Stars." The author likely intended this to be an educational tool to help readers understand the physical world through a lens that was compatible with their heritage.
Observations
The Languages: You’ll notice the bottom of the page includes Latin script in German/Polish: Mesiloth Hamoros, Verlag des Beril Rukenstein.
The Printing House: It was printed at the press of Ch. Rohatyn in Lemberg.
This is one of a kind book that only few copies from the 1st edition are still left
