With this vertically oriented work in an unprecedented format (40x60 cm), Medsan continues his bold exploration and delivers a new striking vision that is resolutely technological of traditional Japan. This print depicts the heaviest figure of tradition and spirituality in Japanese culture — a Sumo wrestler (Rikishi) — reimagined in full combat within the metaverse.

The visual and temporal contrast is striking: depicted in full shiko (the ancestral ritual of lifting the leg to drive away evil spirits), our colossal wrestler wears his traditional mawashi and wields a war fan (gunbai). But the impact occurs on his face: he is completely immersed in an ultra-modern and minimalist virtual reality (VR) headset. The warrior physically rooted to the ground now fights on a digital plane.

The impact of the work also rests on the composition of its background. While the lower part of the canvas faithfully represents the dohyo (the clay-and-rice straw fighting arena), the rest of the piece is dominated by a vivid, solid green background. This decor absence, highly inspired by modern Pop Art, highlights the subject’s muscular tension and the irony of the situation. The traditional vertical cartouche at the top right, bearing the signature "Medsan" in katakana (メドサン), seals this perfect collision between the millennial Edo-era tradition and our age of hyper-connected digital living.
