Description from the seller
MEDSAN - Edo’s Walking Smartphone – The Connected Procession – Edo Smombies
With this square-format work, Medsan continues his bold exploration and gives us a vision that is at once poetic and cynical of our hyper-connected society, translated into traditional Japan. This giclée features three archetypal figures from classic ukiyo-e — a pilgrim monk, an elegant city-dweller in a kimono, and a samurai — united by a shared modern addiction.
The visual and sociological contrast is striking: walking in single file, these three Edo-era characters wander with their eyes riveted to the glowing screens of their smartphones, isolated in their digital bubbles thanks to their wired earbuds. The anachronism peaks with the figure of the samurai who, in addition to his two traditional swords (daisho), carries a black leather laptop case slung crossbody, making him the direct ancestor of the contemporary Japanese salaryman.
The impact of the work rests on its soft color palette and pale beige background, subtly recalling the texture of aged paper from historical prints. This pared-down aesthetic ironies urban isolation and the phenomenon of “smombies” (pedestrians hypnotized by their phones). The traditional vertical cartouche at the bottom right, bearing the signature "Medsan" in katakana (メドサン), seals this fascinating collision between contemplative past and our alienated present.
A piece of crazy charisma, imbued with a profound social critique, ideal for adding an intellectual, elegant, and offbeat touch to a design interior.

About the Studio:
Atelier Joconde is a studio of artists united around a living and plural contemporary creation. Installed as a true artistic production space, the studio operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive research, blending abstract art, art brut, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, realized, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
