With this square-format work, Medsan continues his bold exploration and delivers a new, decidedly satirical and transgressive vision of traditional Japan. This splash depicts an iconic figure of classical Japanese theatre — a Kabuki actor in Kumadori makeup — reimagined as a contemporary photographer equipped to the max.

The visual, scale, and temporal contrast is striking: dressed in a sumptuous kimono with voluminous drapery and complex gold motifs, our actor adopts a dramatic pose (Mie) not to brandish a sword, but to handle a massive digital SLR camera with a massive telephoto lens. His target? A miniature, delicate bonsai. This staging creates a biting irony about our modern technology-obsessed urge to capture everything in macro, in total opposition to the silent, traditional contemplation of nature.

The impact of the work also rests on its matte sage-green background, soothing and reminiscent of historic natural pigments.
