ABOUT THE WORK — To San Francisco
To San Francisco is an image built as a symbolic journey: a frozen scene in the middle of the desert that, in reality, speaks of the momentum of an era.
The work draws inspiration from the aesthetics and cultural imagination of the 1960s: flower power, the Yé-Yé movement, and the free spirit of the Summer of Love. Wardrobe and attitude are not mere styling, but a language full of nods to icons of that era: Brigitte Bardot, Nancy Sinatra, or the popular figure of the traveler who dreams of reaching San Francisco to the rhythm of Scott McKenzie.
The car —a Seat 600— is not a casual prop: its design belongs to the same era and, having a rear engine, allows the smoke to become a dramatic, almost cinematic element. On the license plate discreetly hides the word “Apis” (bee in Latin), a symbol recurring in the artist's visual universe: a silent signature inviting a closer look.
The image was photographed in Los Monegros, a landscape that evokes the arid horizons of the American Southwest and connects with the visual language of contemporary cinema and television (an aesthetic reference, not narrative). The suitcase beside the protagonist also appears in earlier works, creating continuity and memory within the series.
Each detail is designed to build a network of references —fashion, music, cinema, and personal symbols—. To San Francisco offers a second gaze: an image attractive at first glance, that reveals layers and meanings as the viewer lingers.
