Ayrton Senna da Silva (São Paulo, March 21, 1960 – Bologna, May 1, 1994) was a highly successful Brazilian racing driver who became Formula 1 world champion three times within a span of ten seasons. He started 161 races, from pole position 65 times, and won 41 times.

Ayrton Senna began his racing career in karting at the age of four. After competing in Formula Ford 1600 and 2000 classes, he won the British F3 in 1983 ahead of Martin Brundle.

He died as a result of a crash in the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. His death caused a great stir in the F1 community and led to a whole series of safety measures.
